A GIRLS cricket team has been crowned North of England champions and is set to play for the national title at Lords.

The Richmond School Under 15s cricket team was successful in the North Yorkshire rounds of the Lady Taverners Indoor Cricket competition, and went on to represent Yorkshire at Headingly in the North Regional Finals.

After winning three games they were through to the semi final scoring 124-4 against Appleby School, then bowling Appleby out for 80 to win by 44 runs.

Ormskirk School, Lancashire, were the opponents in the final and were the pre-match favourites after winning both indoor and outdoor titles last season.

Ormskirk batted first but with some sharp Richmond bowling backed up by some excellent fielding struggled to 25-4.

Ormskirk made it to 84-7 after eight overs but Richmond succeeded in reaching the target of 95 for the loss of five wickets with just four balls remaining.

The girls now go on to represent the North of England in the National Finals at Lords on May 7.

The team includes Abbie Blenkiron, Lucy Hartley, Georgi Walker, Rosie Brannigan, Liberty Noke, India Wilson, Mairi Teasdale, Amy Jobling and Meg Sutton Walker.
