IT’S Bendiorm or bust for two motor-mad mates, all in aid of a young cancer sufferer.

Anthony Usher and Anthony McGinty are gearing up for the Benidorm Or Bust 1,500-mile endurance driving challenge, to raise money for two-year-old cancer sufferer Bradley Lowery.

The friends, who run Sea View Car Sales and Sea View Performance, in Peterlee, east Durham, respectively, will attempt to drive a £200, 21-year-old, two-litre automatic Volkswagen Passat from Blackpool to Benidorm, on Spain’s Costa Blanca, in just three days, starting on Wednesday, April 30.

They hope to raise at least £1,500 towards the £500,000 needed to send Bradley, of Blackhall, to the United States for treatment of his neuroblastoma, a rare childhood cancer.

Mr Usher, 30, said: “We’re looking forward to seeing the sights.

“We’re massively excited. We’re into motorsport and the chance to drive this... we can’t wait.”

The pair, together known as The SVP Rat Rod, will be one of around 100 teams of between two and five people joining a convoy from Blackpool southwards, through the Channel Tunnel and onto Benidorm via Poitiers, in western France, and Zaragoza, in northern Spain.

Mr Usher said: “We’re both into motorsport so we’ve done track days and race days but never any kind of endurance race.”

The friends will sleep in their car, making use truck stops facilities en route; but, assuming they make it, will have a few days’ holiday in Spain as a reward.

And if all goes well, they may even drive the 1,500 miles back too.

The challenge comes at a busy time for Bradley’s family, with many fundraising events taking place.

On Thursday (April 10) night, Yorkshire and England cricketer Tim Bresnan, who has made Bradley one of his two chosen charities for his benefit year, held his first fundraiser for the brave youngster – a gala dinner at the Royal Armouries in Leeds.

Several of the bowler’s England colleagues attended the event and more details of future events can be found at timbresnanbenefit.co.uk

According to Bradley’s website, the family has so far raised £147,575 of the £500,000 needed.
