LITTER pickers collected 17 bin bags full of rubbish during a Spring clean in Barnard Castle.

Members of Barnard Castle Town Council led the clean-up which saw 12 people clear the area round Scar Top and also Teesdale School.

It formed part of the LitterFree Durham’s Big Spring Clean 2014 campaign. The tidy up took place between 10am and noon yesterday. (Saturday, April 5)

Councillor Sandra Moorhouse said: “We picked up litter from both sides of the town and it was very successful.

“The youngest litter picker was seven-years-old and there were some amazing finds.

“It drives people mad to see so much litter. There is not a lot of growth and so people can see it. We wanted to get as much of it as we could and it really does look much better now.”
