VOLUNTEERS are being sought to help clean up part of their home town.

Barnard Castle Town Council is looking for residents to join a litter pick at Scar Top and the surrounding river bank area, on Saturday, from 10am to noon.

The event is part of LitterFree Durham’s Big Spring Clean 2014 campaign.

The voluntary group works with the County Durham branch of CPRE (Campaign to Protect Rural England), supported by Durham County Council and Darlington Borough Council, to organise Big Spring Clean events across County Durham and Darlington.

A town council spokeswoman said: “The Big Spring Clean is a great way for local people to come together and help clean up after the minority who feel it is acceptable to drop litter.

“It is a community initiative in addition to the work that the two councils already do to combat litter.”

All ages, including families, are welcome to take part.

Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Participants should wear suitable outdoor clothing and boots or wellies.

The Town Council will provide litter-picking tools.
