HAIRDRESSERS from around the region have gathered to celebrate 50 years of training at a North-East college.

Darlington College has offered tutoring for aspiring hair stylists since 1964 and brought together former and current students, staff and employers to mark the anniversary.

Organiser and college tutor Carol Cook said the event had been inspired by current students who wanted to find out more about the industry’s links with the college.

She said: “It’s hard to believe that hair tutoring at the college only started in 1964 but it has grown from strength to strength since then.

“Beauty was eventually added to the curriculum and now we teach an array of hair and beauty skills for students ready to find work in salons, spas or on cruise ships.”

The anniversary event included displays from industry supplies and design specialists and featured a fashion show of the key styles for upcoming school proms.

Former students were also given the chance to tour the salon and training facilities the college now offers in its new campus.

Proceeds from the event, held in the college atrium, will be donated to the Teenage Cancer Trust.
