HUNDREDS of part-time police officers are descending on the North-East for their annual gathering.

Durham Constabulary is hosting the 2014 National Special Constabulary Conference this weekend as hundreds of "specials" from across England and Wales descend upon Durham City.

The conference will bring members of the Special Constabulary together to share and exchange good practice with other forces, and further develop and enhance knowledge and expertise.

Deputy Chief Constable, Michael Banks, who is the Association of Chief Police Officers lead for the Special Constabulary, said: “The specials are an integral part of any police force, delivering front-line policing in our communities and providing support to regular officers.

“We are delighted to be hosting this national conference as it is an excellent opportunity to bring specials together to share their experiences.”

The conference will be opened by Sir Peter Fahy, Chief Constable of Greater Manchester Police, and will also be attended by Professor James Albrecht from the Police Reserves Association in America, who will deliver a keynote speech.

Durham Police and Crime Commissioner Ronn Hogg said he was “delighted to be attending the national conference”, which would acknowledge the fantastic that specials do.
