DEVELOPMENT of the Roman fort, Segedunum, at Wallsend, North Tyneside, is the subject of a talk by archivist/historian Bill Griffiths.

The senior manager with Tyne and Wear Archives and Museums is guest speaker of The Architectural and Archaeological Society of Durham and Northumberland.

He will be speaking at the society’s monthly meeting, in Lecture Room 141, Elvet Riverside, New Elvet, Durham, on Saturday April 5, at 2.30pm. Admission is free.

WEDDING FAIR: The first ever wedding fair to be staged at Crook Hall and Gardens, the medieval manor house attraction in Sidegate, off Framwelgate Waterside, in Durham, takes place tomorrow (Saturday March 29).

Fifty wedding suppliers, from photographers to make-up artists and dress designers, will be exhibiting at the medieval manor house, from 11am - 4pm.

Entry is free, with the hall’s café open throughout offering a range of refreshments.

SINISTER DURHAM: Photographer Philip Nixon leads a two-hour ramble around Durham looking at the city’s seamier side for potential picture scenes.

The walk, on Tuesday (April 1), begins at the Londonderry statue, in the Market Place, at 10am. There is a £4 charge per walker.

JAZZ NIGHTS: The first monthly jazz session takes place at The Empty Shop, at 35c Framwelgate Bridge, Durham, on Thursday (April 3), at 8pm.

Vocal-led guitar quartet, The Debra Milne Ensemble, are the first of four monthly guest performers, playing a selection of jazz standards, plus some original pieces.

Doors open at 7.30pm, with a £4 charge on the door.

Safe Sextet, Redemption Jazz and Ray Burns Trio will be future artists, playing at the same venue, on the first Thursday of the next three months.

MASHAM WALKS: Durham Rambling Club stages walks of differing difficulty in the Masham area of Wensleydale, North Yorkshire, on Sunday, April 6.

One will follow a nine-mile route, via Hackfall, with a 12-mile trek, via The Druids Temple, for the more hardy walkers.

Travel is by coach, with pick-ups to be made around Durham, for a cost of £12.

VILLAGE HOPS: Rock and roll era revival dance nights take place fortnightly at the Village Hall, in Front Street East, Coxhoe, near Durham, from 7am to 11pm.
