A FORMER butcher has admitted carrying a steak knife in a threatening manner in public.

Michael Stoves, 32, is said to have shouted abusively at a man in The Avenue, Seaham, County Durham, on Friday February 21.

Appearing at Durham Crown Court for a preliminary hearing in the case today (Wednesday March 26) he pleaded guilty to using threatening, abusive or insulting words and behaviour and to possessing a knife or sharp-pointed article, namely a butcher’s steak knife, in a public place.

Defence counsel Ian Hudson asked for sentence to be adjourned to allow for preparation of a background report on Stoves by the Probation Service, as well as for a full medical report.

“He knows the situation here. Carrying a knife in public and making threats, that clearly crosses the custody threshold,” said Mr Hudson.

“But, he’s 32, with no previous convictions, although he has a number of cautions.

“He’s a butcher by profession, but he’s been out of work for about three years, during which time he’s suffered depression, anxiety and stress, which is why I’m seeking a full medical report.

“There will also be references, including one from a former employer, to present to the court when he is back before the court for sentence.”

Agreeing to the adjournment, Judge Christopher Prince bailed Stoves, of The Avenue, Seaham, to return for sentence on April 25.

But he told him: “The fact I’m adjourning for a report is no indication as to what the outcome will be on that day.”
