FORMER England football boss Steve McClaren today blew the whistle to officially launch a mammoth fund-raising run.

Entries are now open for the sixth annual York 10K - organised by Jane Tomlinson’s Run For All and predicted to be a huge charity money-spinner.

Around 6,000 people are expected to take part in the event on August 3, following a route taking in some of the city’s stunning landmarks including the Minster and Clifford’s Tower.

Steve, who was born in York and is now in charge at Derby County, urged as many as possible to take part in the event.

“Those taking part get to run through such a great city and raise money for a charity of their choice – it really is a win-win situation,” he said.

“Jane Tomlinson was an inspirational figure and this event is a big part of her legacy. I hope lots of people are inspired to offer it their support.”

The event also incorporates the Morrison Utility Services Corporate Challenge, in which hundreds of businessmen and women will compete to lift the title of York’s fastest firm.

And youngsters can also take part as taking place alongside the event is the free Arena Group York Mini and Junior Run.

Among the supporters of the York 10k is the Asda Foundation whose manager Julie Ward said: “It is a marvellous event that does so much to raise funds that charities need to continue their vital work.”

Entrants can raise money for one of the event’s partner charity or a good cause of their choice. For more information and to enter go to runforall.com
