A STUDENT from north Durham is raising money to fund a trip to South Africa to study the effects of apartheid.

Emily Henderson, 20, from South Moor, Stanley, who is studying history at the University of York, is flying out there in June for two weeks.

The former Stanley School of Technology and Durham Johnston pupil has been accepted into the International Study Centre scheme, allowing her to go to the University of Cape Town.

Miss Henderson said: “Apart from recent affairs which make it particularly interesting, I am looking forward to being able to gain more perspective as living in Britain it's easy to take for granted everyday freedom.”

Miss Henderson is hoping to do charity events with schools in the area to raise the £1,500 she needs to take part.

She is prepared to talk to pupils about her trip and would like to hear from schools interested her in sponsoring her in return for a visits and local businesses who can offer support.
