A LIVERY owner has criticised Darlington Borough Council for failing to deal with illegal flytipping near his business.

Bags of building waste, old televisions, Christmas trees, mattresses, and deadly asbestos are just some of the items that have been repeatedly dumped in Snipe Lane, leading to Newstead Farm Livery over the past few months.

John Auger and his wife, Sally, have run the business - near The Northern Echo Arena - since August last year.

They have repeatedly asked the council to clear the mess, but to no avail.

Although Mr Auger does not own the road, he has offered to help the authority take action against the perpetrators but says he has had no response.

“We have logged five complaints on their website and each time they get closed down the next day,” he said.

“They claim they have no responsibility over the road, but no-one seems to know who owns the road.

“We pay thousands of pounds every year in business rates and domestic council tax and we get nothing back in return.

“It is almost like they would like to see the place close and go away than help us.”

The road is a public footpath and Mr Auger has often cleared the rubbish himself, as well as spending around £1,000 last year on repairing potholes.

“At one point there were beds and mattresses completely blocking the road, as well as Christmas trees, which we had to move ourselves,” he said.

“We are trying to run a successful business but this is making it extremely difficult - nobody would want to have to drive past that.”

Mr Auger has enlisted the help of Councillor Martin Swainston, who is calling on the authority to take action.

Coun Swainston said: “Fly tipping is a major problem in Darlington and it is getting worse.

“The problem we have in the borough is that unfortunately the person who is responsible for this is Councillor Nick Wallis and he is failing in his duty to deal with these issues.”

A council spokeswoman said: "We have been speaking with Mr Auger and we're aware of the problems he's been having with flytipping on his land and we're working with him to identify the culprits.

“The council focuses its resources on removing flytipping from public land rather than people's private properties."

With the increase in numbers of travellers who generally have no qualms about dumping their commercial waste wherever it suits, and large household items that need paid for permits to take to the dump, is there any wonder people just dump stuff?

Its the same all over, the council charges everybody to dump their items, this leads to dumping, no matter who it may be. The problems are created by the authorities and the public pick up the bill with the mess and the eventual cost of clear up. At the end of the day the only one getting fat out of it is WADES.

You've got to have a van to get this kind of waste to this location. Look no further than our beloved travellers if you want to find the culprits.

Because travellers are the only people with vans! I have personally seen (and reported) a double glazing company and a landscape gardening company fly tipping. I will also add that I have seen large amounts of waste left behind after travellers have vacated grass verges alongside roads, that I know for a fact weren't there before they arrived, so don't be thinking I'm not wanting to attribute the blame to travellers if it really was done by them!

To put the blame on any one specific way of life is rediculous, I am not a traveller, nor do I own a van but I can garuntee that if someone tries to charge me for disposing of waste by correct means then I will find a non payment alternative way of getting rid of my rubbish.

If local councils want to prevent fly tipping then they should put the council tax they collect to good use by arranging proper acroos the board refuse collection.

I get very little services for the money they take from me at present so sure as hell I am not going to pay extra for services I should already be getting.

This is a dose of real life, costs go up, taxes go up services come down, at one point it seems Darlington was getting on top of the fly tipping problem, but any idiot with half a brain cell could have forseen the charges brought in to tip your rubbish would result in this, so does that mean our councilors have less than half a brain cell? I am putting off doing my kitchen and bathroom as it will cost half as much again to take it to the tip and multiple trips in my nice clean car as I cant get a permit on the day to take a van. Fly Tipping isnt a traveler problem its an unscrupulous person problem, not only small business but individuals as well. I can understand a business fly tipping, I dont agree with it but it saves them money, but individuals, you have your rubbish in the car, its household rubbish, your out, so why spend hours driving around to round an secluded spot to dump it, chances are you have driven pass the tip to dump it. But its also our own council that "fly tip" as well, as in recent work done in my area I find discarded fixing and wrappers just dropped by workmen which I have to pick up. House holders are still putting out bags and boxes, which inevitable get open and the rubbish blows away, always landing in my garden or around my house, the road sweepers are very active up the west end of town and the main roads, I see one may be twice a year. Try spending Britain in Bloom money on actually making the town clean and tidy before poshing up small parts of the town to show off to judges.

I really love the comment by Colcat, Because travellers are the only people with vans. You want to get around the council estates and count the number of
commercial vehicles, belonging to the non gypsy, non tax paying, self employed, benefit claiming riffraff, who are known as wannabees but never will bees. supposedly living and claiming from their parents house why the little
slapper who lives 2 doors down are claiming one parent benefit for his kids,
and 2 or 3 more that aren't he's. But I never see any comments about these people. I think that there is an awful lot of bitter, jealous people out there
blaming the gypsies for anything at all, because they're getting shafted by the government and hav'nt got the gonads to do anything about it. who wants to pay taxes in this country, not me mush.......
I arent a traveller myself so am not qualified to comment BUT I do think they are resourceful on the whole not lazy; and do not play the benefits system anything like other sectors of community (sorry folks but this guy is not too far wrong)Also look at day-long boozers in town pubs. "disabled" spending taxpayers donations in some cases. One point is, the travellers and scrappers save the Council plenty by taking away old washers and small metal. for scrap that householders put out in back lanes due to exorbitant charge to move by the Council . Not every household has transport Not all gypsies have either. Agree that some flytipping is done by contractors and companies to avoid tip charges.
I have seen them. Council need to wake up and abolish charges.

I took stuff to Wades tip last week and wasn't charged -it was an old mattress and some old bedroom furniture -who gets charged? If its contractors then they should get charged why not? I got a new fridge freezer from Argos last week and they offered to take the old one away for me for a small charge -I gladly paid -whats with this 'everything should be free' attitude? Free for domestic waste yes -but contractors should pay to get rid of their commercial waste.

It's OK saying contractors should pay but some dump because it is easy and the chance of ending up paying a fine are small. That is the reality of the situation.

Likewise a householder will be charged for building waste - old toilets, hand basins etc. This is not so in North Yorkshire or County Durham. The service provided by DBC does not compare well to neighbouring councils..

Someone who wants rid of unwanted white goods will be charged if he can not take it to the tip so again they are dumped.

The same houses dump rubbish in back streets week after week and the council turn a blind eye to it. It's anti-social. It's illegal but it's not policed properly. It's the council responsibility. No one else can do it and DBC don't bother. So we have a problem.

You get charged at the tip for a number of things in Darlington, where it was free before. People who are told that it will cost to drop rubbish off just go to Aycliffe and dump it free in their tip.

It's obvious that with Nick Wallis running the show there will be more and more fly tipping.
