A BOOK shop which has revamped its premises and introduced a series of entertainment events is bidding to become Britain’s best after landing a regional accolade.

White Rose BookCafe, in Market Place, Thirsk, has been given The Bookseller Industry Awards northern title.

Judges said the shop, which was launched in 1995 and now employs 15 staff, had demonstrated innovation, passion and expertise at a challenging time for independent book stores.

Events at the shop include Blooming Words cabaret evenings and regular story sessions for children.

Shop director Sue Lake said: “To be awarded the accolade of best Independent Bookseller North is a fantastic recognition of the hard work all the staff put in every day, I’m absolutely delighted.”

The national winner will be revealed at a ceremony in London on Monday, May 12.
