A MAN who is recovering after having his penis cut off has been spoken to in hospital on a number of occasions by detectives but they are still no closer to discovering how he sustained his injuries.

The 40-year-old had been placed in a medically-induced coma after he was taken to hospital with wounds to his groin after being discovered staggering along the A66 early last Thursday morning (March 12).

It is believed his injuries were sustained at the travellers' site where he was living in John Boyle Road, South Bank, near Middlesbrough.

A Cleveland Police spokeswoman said: “We continue to carry out further enquiries in relation to the injuries sustained by a man who was found on the A66 last week.

“This has included piecing together the movements of the man on the evening of Wednesday, March 12 between 6pm when he returned home from work and police locating him by the side of the A66 at approximately 5am the following morning.

“Specially trained officers have visited the man on a number of occasions since his admittance to hospital and have spoken to him about his injuries and how he has come about them. He is engaging with these officers and is assisting them as he continues to undergo treatment and begin recovery.”

A 22-year-old man arrested on suspicion of assault has been released on police bail pending further inquiries.

Anyone with information is asked to call Cleveland Police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800-555-111.
