FIVE young musicians will compete for an annual prize this weekend.

The shortlist has been announced for the prize presented by the James Etherington Music Trust and the Rotary Club of Chester-le-Street.

Pianists Angel Chan, Bolin Dai and Susanna Ward will be joined by singer Anna Marmion and Andrew Hedley on euphonium in the competition taking place at the Methodist Church, in Chester-le-Street on Saturday.

Each will give a 15-minute presentation and admission to the even, which starts at 7pm, is free.

The first prize is £300 to further their musical education, with a runners-up prize of £150.

The Trust was set up in 1978 to commemorate the distinguished musical career of local singer James Etherington, who gained national recognition and became a well known tenor in London West End shows.
