A MULTI-million pound expansion for an edge-of-town retail park has been given the go-ahead.
Durham County Council has granted planning permission for three new shops at the Arnison Centre, Pity Me, Durham City.
The units will be built between Pets at Home and McDonald’s, near Rotary Way, and probably house restaurants and cafes.
Further, the council has cleared the way for Pets at Home to move into the vacant former Comet unit.
The project is part of a wider modernisation of the 25,000sq metre retail complex, which is now 25 years old.
A three-hour parking limit will be introduced across the shopping centre and extra parking will be provided behind shops for staff working there.
Local county councillor Mark Wilkes was involved in talks with Arnison Centre bosses over improving the proposals.
