BUDDING sports stars were treated to a netballing master class when an ex-England netball international put students at Yarm School through their paces.

Karen Greig, who has represented her country 31 times, led a netball session for the school’s senior girls before meeting staff.

Naomi Redhead, head of girls’ games at Yarm School, said: “It was an enjoyable day and we are grateful to Karen for giving her time and effort to visit the school and showcase her talents.”

The former shooter is now assistant coach of Netball Super League side Manchester Thunder, who as a player, she captained to the Super League title in 2011.

In addition to her coaching duties, Karen is a regional performance pathway coach for the North West at England Netball.

Netball is one of Yarm School’s major sports with pupils representing the school from under nine to under 18 level.

The school plays regular fixtures and enter competitions with local schools, as well as travelling to national competitions. Many Yarm School pupils also choose to play netball outside of school.

Both Holly Clark and Rachel Bradley were selected to play for Team Northumbria Netball Performance Squad, one of only ten performance teams in the country.

Ms Redhead added: “It was a privilege to have such a high profile and successful netball player offer an insight into the sport and give our pupils an unforgettable learning experience. I would like to wish Karen all the best with her netball coaching career.”
