POLICE have named a teenager who died when his car crashed on Friday evening.

Jed Johnson, aged 17, from Toft Hill, in County Durham, sustained fatal injuries in the accident, which occurred on the A688 Staindrop Road, near the Oakley service station, in West Auckland, just before 7pm.

The Vauxhall Corsa he was driving left the road as it took a bend, colliding with some trees and spinning round.

A 15-year-old female passenger, from Barnard Castle, was taken to James Cook University Hospital, in Middlesbrough, as a precaution but discharged after it was confirmed she had no serious injuries.

Durham Police are continuing their investigations into the accident and appealed to any witnesses to call the road policing unit on 101.
