OLD soldiers have appealed for wartime memorabilia to create a display at their local Royal British Legion club.

Henry Reed, 90, said, as part of the commemorations of the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War, a memorabilia room would be created at the Royal British Legion Club in Meadowfield, near Durham City.

The project is in conjunction with the Brandon and Meadowfield branch of the Royal British Legion.

Mr Reed said: “We have contacted the Durham Light Infantry Museum and will be meeting them to see if they have any artefacts we can display.

“We are looking for any medals, photographs, letters or anything else to do with the DLI, who served in the First and Second World Wars as well as Korea.

“Brandon Parish Council has donated £1,700 towards decorating a room to be used for the display.”

Parish council chairman John Grantham had pledged to donate 50 per cent of the proceeds of his charity toward the display, added Mr Reed.
