ROMANTIC rail fans cooked up a Valentine’s Day breakfast on the footplate of a historic locomotive.
A platter of heart-shaped sausages and eggs was heated up today (Thursday, February 13) by the crew of Sir Nigel Gresley, the A4 class engine on show at Shildon, County Durham.
The meal was on the menu for museum volunteers Neil and Lynda Adams who recently celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary.
The locomotive is at Shildon for The Great Goodbye exhibition which honours fellow A4 Mallard setting the world record for a steam engine in 1938.
Paul Fox, a driver on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, where the engine normally runs, cooked the meal.
He said: “If a railway lover was to make a special breakfast for the lady in his life, this is the way to do it.
“Engine crew would favour rashers and an egg fried over the loco’s firebox which can sizzle to perfection when resting in a siding.
“With three locos being in light steam for The Great Goodbye event, it gives us an opportunity to rustle up a romantic feast for Neil and Lynda.”
The Great Goodbye runs from Saturday, February 15 to Sunday, February 23 with doors open between 9.30am and 5pm with free entry.
