Northern Powergrid has this morning released a dramatic photograph of damage to powerlines just south of Houghton le Spring, Tyne and Wear.

A spokesman said engineers are continuing to work through the day to restore power to customers still off supply as a result of last night’s conditions.

The line is blocked in one direction, which means trains have to alternate running in both directions on one section of track. Robin Gisby, managing director for network operations at Network Rail has announced that the West Coast Main Line will close at around 1900 GMT tonight for two hours because of the high winds over the western half of the country.

Cleveland Police Road Policing Unit have just put out the following warning:

"Please take care on the roads today.

"There is currently a Met Office Amber weather warning in force for High Winds with gusts of up to 80 miles per hour forecast.

"If driving high sided vehicles, or light vehicles such as Luton Vans be aware of the extreme hazards involved.

"There is a Met Office Yellow weather warning for snow for County Durham and Northumberland from 21:00h tonight with snow possible throughout the North East of England by the morning."
