A SPECIAL exhibition will be held in Chester-le-Street to mark the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War.

Community Service Volunteers (CSV) have received a £9,700 Heritage Lottery grant for the project.

A team of CSV’s Retired and Senior Volunteers (RSVP) will create a pop-up display with the Chester-le-Street Heritage Group.

It will feature photographs, letters, keepsakes, uniforms and medals of people from the town who fought the war. Information will be accessible online.

Ashleigh Gibson, CSV Development Worker, said: “This project will increase knowledge about how local communities were affected by the Great War.

“With the 100 year anniversary being marked in August, we hope to get both young and old involved so they can share memories and learn more about how our town played a huge part in history.”
