POLICE divers are preparing to spend a fourth day searching the River Ouse for missing university student Megan Roberts.

The 20-year-old was last seen in the area around Lendal Bridge, York, at around 2.20am on Thursday January 23 after a night out with friends.

Police said CCTV images showed the fine arts undergraduate running down Tanners Moat towards the river with a group of people “heavily affected by alcohol”, but did not show her running back up the street with the others.

Underwater search teams spent today (Thursday, January 30) in a stretch of the river between Lendal Bridge and Scarborough Bridge.

They used a weighted dummy to check the speed and power of the river.

Other officers conducted a search along the banks on both sides of the river for several miles, between Naburn, south of York, and Scarborough Bridge.

Dozens of volunteers have joined the Missing People charity handing out leaflets in the city centre to raise awareness of the York St John University student’s disappearance.

Police said there was nothing to indicate criminal activity or that anybody was directly responsible for Miss Roberts’ disappearance.

In the city centre, more than 30 volunteers joined the Missing People charity, handing out flyers and posters and raising awareness of Megan’s disappearance.

Superintendent Phil Cain said it remained possible Miss Roberts was safe elsewhere, but added: “Realistically given the passage of time, such a possibility is increasingly remote.”
