YOUTHS throwing stones at traffic are being warned they are putting people's lives at risk.

Police have spoken out after a series of incidents in the Washington area of Wearside.

A 15-year-old boy was arrested after a stone was thrown at a car damaging its door and window near Washington Comprehensive School, at 8.30am on Friday, January 24 The boy was arrested and bailed pending a youth surgery.

In a second incident, another vehicle was damaged when youths threw stones at a car on Blue House Lane, in Usworth, between 6.10pm and 6.20pm, on Sunday, January 26, Police are carrying out patrols in the area to stop incidents taking place.

Dave Cole, acting neighbourhood inspector for Washington, said: "These youngsters may see this as a prank but it's completely irresponsible and dangerous.

"Not only are they putting people at risk but they could end up with a criminal record which could ultimately impact on their future.

"The youngsters involved need to think carefully about the consequences of their actions.

"We know it's a handful of young people who are involved and I'd urge anyone with information or who witnesses any offences take place to let us know as soon as possible."
