A 55-YEAR-OLD man has died after his car overturned on a slip road off the A19 and smashed into a road sign.

Fire crews from Northallerton and Thornaby and an incident support unit from Richmond were called at 7.30pm last night (Tuesday, January 28) to assist police at the scene of the crash, yards from the Cleveland Tontine restaurant, Osmotherley, near Northallerton.

Firefighters used a winch, strops and hydraulic rescue equipment to free the driver, who lived in Eaglescliffe, from the Audi car.

Yorkshire Ambulance Service said an ambulance and two doctors attended the incident, but the driver died at the scene.

Police said there were no passengers in the car.

The road was closed for several hours following the crash as police investigators examined the scene.

Diversions were put in place at the junction with the A684 near Osmotherley.

Anyone who witnessed the crash or saw the Audi near the accident scene should call North Yorkshire Police on 101.
