A TYRE blaze near York is expected to continue until it burns itself out over the next ten to 14 days, according to fire crews.

The large fire at Newgen recycling plant, in Sherburn in Elmet, near York, began on Thursday, January 16.

At its height, the blaze could be seen from space as a plume of thick black smoke reached more than 5,000ft and involved fire crews from across Yorkshire.

Police, fire crews and other agencies are running a joint investigation into its cause, which involved 15,000 tonnes of tyres.

Officers have questioned and released a 51-year-old local man on bail pending further enquiries.

Police are advising anyone concerned about the effects of the smoke on their health to contact their GP, or call the NHS on 111.

Anyone with information that could assist the investigation is urged to contact North Yorkshire Police on 101 and ask for York CID or email; Sinead.Brocken@northyorkshire.pnn.police.uk
