THE residents of a new housing estate have received free shed alarms to improve security in their community.

Police gave the alarms to the residents of Greenwood Court in Newton Aycliffe, following a request from Philip Clark, chairman of Horndale Residents Association.

Mr Clark said: “The neighbours are still getting to know each other and do not know if visitors are genuine or others looking for easy pickings.

“This is an easy method of crime prevention and also helps give tenants a warm welcome to their new homes.”

Greenfield Court stands on the site of a former derelict nursing home and comprises 22 energy efficient homes, which are let out and managed by the social housing and communities organisation livin.

Newton Aycliffe Neighbourhood Police Team received funding for the shed alarms and other security items from Great Aycliffe and Middridge Area Action Partnership.

Anyone who would like crime prevention advice can contact the team on 101 or call in at the police station on Central Avenue.
