DETECTIVES investigating the death of hit-and-run victim Danny Wake have reassured people they are doing all they can to find the driver responsible, after supporters accused the police of not doing enough to investigate his death.

The three-year-old, from Darlington, was knocked over and killed on November 4 as he walked home from the town centre with his mother and younger brother.

Despite extensive and repeated appeals by both police and Danny’s friends and family, the driver responsible for the youngster’s death has so far not been traced.

An online petition urging police to do more to investigate his death was launched on Sunday (January 12) and has so far gained more than 390 signatures.

The petition – Justice for Danny Wake – is not directly linked to Danny’s immediate family, but states supporters believe there have been a number of key leads given to the police that have not been followed up.

Durham Police said since the incident, more than 300 homes have been visited and a number of potential witnesses have been interviewed.

Hundreds of hours of CCTV footage have also been examined and more than 300 calls have been made to police following media appeals.

Detective Superintendent Kevin Weir, who is leading the investigation, said: “I am aware of the Justice for Danny Wake petition which has been set up this week and would like to take the opportunity to reassure people that all relevant lines of enquiry are being followed up in order to establish what happened to Danny.

“The response from the public has been overwhelming and demonstrates how people share our determination to establish what happened to Danny on that fateful day, and I am very grateful to all those who have contacted us over the last nine weeks.”

His mother, Kayren Winter, said although the investigation went quiet over Christmas and New Year, the family has recently been brought up-to-date with any developments.

She also urged any potential witnesses to come forward and said whoever hit Danny may not have known they had done it.

“It has been hard over Christmas without Danny, but the family has all been together which has made it alright,” she said.

“Anyone who knows anything should come forward - even if it is just a little thing, it could help.”

Danny was struck by a vehicle near the junction of Falmer Road and Neasham Road, in Darlington, at about 10.35am on November 4.

Anyone with any information can call Durham Police on 101.
