A MOTORIST is fighting for his life in hospital after he collided with a crash barrier on the A1 motorway yesterday morning (Sunday, January 12).

The 25-year-old was driving along the southbound carriageway at about 7.40am when, for some unknown reason, his Fiat Punto left the road and collided with a crash barrier and a tree just south of Junction 60 at Bradbury, near Sedgefield, County Durham.

Firefighters had to free the man from the wreckage of the car before the Great North Air Ambulance Service could airlift him to James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough.

The man, who is from Coxhoe, suffered serious head and chest injuries and remains in a critical condition.

Police are appealing to anyone who witnessed the accident to get in touch.

Officers would particularly like to speak to the driver or occupants of a dark coloured Mazda 3, which was travelling along the northbound carriageway at the time of the accident.

Anyone with information should dial 101 and ask for the road policing unit or collision investigation unit.
