A SUSPECT package discovered in a house this morning (Monday, January 13) has been declared safe by explosive experts.
Homes on St George’s Road, Grangetown, near Middlesbrough, were evacuated at 10am while the bomb disposal team travelled from Catterick to inspect the package.
Police liaised with local residents and the headteacher of Grangetown Primary School to ensure their safety throughout the incident.
A Cleveland Police spokeswoman said: “Explosives experts from Catterick have now made and declared safe the item inside an address in St George’s Road, Grangetown with no controlled explosion necessary.
“The cordon will be lifted shortly and the small number of residents who were evacuated will be allowed to return to their homes.
“Investigations into the nature of the item and how it came to be at the address will continue.
“Public safety is always our priority and police would like to thank local people, including the nearby primary school community, for their co-operation and patience during the incident.
“We would also like to thank our colleagues at Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council and Home Group at Runswick Housing for their assistance this morning. Also the Fire and Ambulance services who stood by ready to assist if needed.”
