A COMPANY of world-renowned organ makers has been showing off its latest new instrument.

Experts at Harrison and Harrison (H&H) organ makers, a 150-year-old firm based in Meadowfield, near Durham City, recently finished work on a new organ for the 14th Century-built Edington Priory, in Wiltshire.

It was shown off during an open day today (Thursday, January 9), which included recitals by James Lancelot of Durham Cathedral, Professor John Butt of Glasgow University and Robert Sharpe of York Minster.

The new organ was built in a typical English style to accompany choral music, serving as a miniature cathedral organ.

Having taken more than a year to build, the instrument will soon be taken to bits to be transported to the Priory, where it will first be played on Palm Sunday, April 13, and be dedicated by the Bishop of Salisbury during the renowned Edington Festival in August.

The organ cost around £425,000.

H&H repaired Westminster Abbey’s organ for the wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and has built or restored organs for cathedrals in Durham, Belfast, Coventry, Edinburgh and across the world.
