A FIRE at UK Wood Recycling's Wilton site near Redcar has been extinguished by Cleveland Fire Brigade and SembCorp Utilities Fire Service after more than two weeks.

The fire, which was finally put out last night (Tuesday), had been burning since Monday December 23 and involved 16,000 tonnes of waste wood which was stored at the site for recycling.

The fire has been burning in a controlled manner overseen by Cleveland Fire Brigade with support from SembCorp Utilities' Fire Service.

Vicki Hughes, business development director at UK Wood Recycling, said: "We are very grateful to Cleveland Fire Brigade and SembCorp Utilities Fire Service for the on-going work they have done to manage this situation for us, particularly their unfaltering coverage over the Christmas period.

"Once again we would like to apologise to the local community for the disruption this has caused to residents and businesses. We have been analysing the local air quality monitors and can clearly see where and when the smoke was affecting certain areas.

"We are now working with local councillors and community groups in these areas to look at how we can thank the community for the support and understanding we have been shown during this time."
