YOUNGSTERS travelled back in time as they walked to school with an ancient Greek after a pupil won a competition.

Antonia Dougall-Green, seven, chose the theme for the walk to Cockton Hill Junior School, in Bishop Auckland.

The pupils were joined by Dave Eliot Cooper, of the Histrionics drama company, who dressed as Greek warrior for the event.

Antonia won the walk through Durham County Council’s Mega Motion campaign which aims to promote a healthier lifestyle.

Pupils gain points for using sustainable travel to get to school which they can then cash in for prizes.

Deputy headteacher Emily Stevens said: “Antonia had to say who from history she wanted to go to school with and she chose an ancient Greek.

“We also had a special fantastic assembly where the children learned about the fall of Troy. The children also dressed in white and had laurels on their heads.”

The Mega Motion scheme aims to encourage children to walk, scoot or ride bikes to school.

Councillor Neil Foster, the council’s cabinet member for economic regeneration, said: “It’s great to see the kids enjoy such a memorable day.

“Mega Motion helps our children to stay healthy and it teaches them all about environmentally friendly ways of travel from a young age.”
