Murder investigation after amateur boxer dies in Hartlepool

A MURDER investigation has begun after the death of an amateur boxer in Hartlepool.

Police were called to an address on Hutton Avenue at about 10.20pm last night, New Year's Eve.

"A thirty one year old local man was taken to hospital with serious injuries but sadly pronounced dead," said a spokeswoman for Cleveland Police.

"A post mortem examination will be carried out to establish the cause of death later today.

"Police have cordoned the address off and are carrying out house to house enquiries in the area."

The dead man has been named locally as Mark Denton, a talented amateur boxer from the town.

A 17-year-old has been arrested in connection with the incident and is due to be questioned by police.

Police ask that anyone who was in the area at the time last night and who may have information to contact the non-emergency number 101.
