CHURCHES joined together to welcome in the New Year at Durham Cathedral this evening.

The service of reflection was organised by Durham Churches Together.

A lantern procession took place from Durham Market Place to the cathedral.

Tomorrow (New Year's Day), visitors to Durham Cathedral are invited to celebrate the New Year by walking a labyrinth from 1pm to 3pm.

People will be on hand to answer questions and make suggestions for how to meditate and pray as they walk.

Canon Rosalind Brown of Durham Cathedral said: “Over the centuries people have discovered that walking a labyrinth slowly and meditatively is a helpful way of praying, even if they do not usually pray much.

“We hope that many people will try this as a different way of beginning the New Year.”
