A CAT is recovering after its leg was broken by a pellet from an air rifle.

The owners of the black cat called Pedro face a vet's bill of more than £900 following the incident.

Police said Pedro was often seen in the Meadow Close and Cow Close areas of Coxhoe and Coxhoe Sports Centre.

Between 8.30am and 2pm on Friday December 20

A resident found the cat in a garden in Meadow View crying in pain on Friday, December 20.

The pellet had entered the cat’s right back leg. The leg was broken and had to be pinned.

PC Paul Vickers, of Durham Police, said: “Initially the vet had to tell the owners there was a real chance the cat might need to be put down, or have his leg amputated.

“Someone in the area must know who is responsible and the owners of Pedro are understandably very upset.

“If you know who is responsible please let us know.”

The officer investigating is PC 2694 Thompson and the crime number is ED1304301.

Anyone with information is asked to call police on the non-emergency number 101.
