A COMMUNITY recycling campaign in east Durham is appealing for the support of residents to help meet its final targets by donating their additional empty drinks cans from the festive period.
The Million Can Challenge spearheaded by the Peterlee-based East Durham Trust, was launched in the summer in with the aim of collecting 1m drinks cans for recycling.
All proceeds raised are being ploughed back into local community groups and fundraising campaigns.
Several local initiatives have already benefitted from cash raised through the challenge including Shotton Youth Group, Haswell and District Mencap Sensory Garden Project, Bradley Lowery’s Fight, Stonham’s Physical Activity fund and Macmillan.
It has also provided support for Jordan Williams in entering the Thai Boxing World Championships.
East Durham Trust chief executive Malcolm Fallow said: “It has been tremendous to see the community respond to this campaign.
“We are sure with one final push we can reach the target. Of course the real benefit here has been the commitment to improving the local environment whilst also raising much needed funds for local charities.”
