Police find suspected Darlington thief asleep in shop in stolen jumper with keys from car he is alleged to have taken

The Northern Echo: A suspected drug user is spending Christmas behind bars after being locked up for a range of offences A suspected drug user is spending Christmas behind bars after being locked up for a range of offences

A SUSPECTED drug user is spending Christmas behind bars after being found asleep in a shop, wearing a stolen jumper and in possession of the keys from a stolen car.

The unnamed offender was locked up on suspicion of committing a range of offences, including stealing a car while under the influence of illicit substances.

Police say the man is suspected of stealing a £169 designer sweater from the Van Mildert store, in Darlington, on Thursday (December 19), before getting into a taxi and fleeing without paying the fare.

He is then said to have gone to a motor repair garage, in an undisclosed location, and made his way to a staff only area, where he stole a body warmer and the keys to a customer’s car.

He stole the vehicle, which was parked outside and later found abandoned.

A spokesman for Darlington police said: “The male committed all these offences whilst being under the influence of drugs and was wearing hospital pyjamas at the time, [he] was found fast asleep in a town centre store, wearing the stolen sweater and in possession of the stolen vehicle keys.”

He was charged with offences including theft, making off without payment, burglary, taking a vehicle without consent, driving while unfit through drink or drugs and driving while disqualified and placed on remand until New Year’s Eve.

Careful what you write on here. The Northern Echo has a nasty habit of forced sensorship when people speak their minds about things that are happening in the community. I see they've taken down all the comments made about the scum bag car thief and the scroat who was killed last week because people aired their views. It's an absolute disgrace. I wasn't aware we lived in North Korea!!! N. Echo editor - you are a disgrace and an embarrassment to your trade and you should hang your head in shame. We the readers of this so called newspaper have every right to speak our minds about stories that appear on this web site. And that means expressing views that you may not agree with you complete bell end. So kindly STOP playing god with our rights to freedom of speech OK!!!

Its not often I agree with your opinion but I believe wholeheartedly that you have the right to express them.
As someone who has been the victim of both burglary and car theft I feel it is my right to say what I think of the low life's that plague our society.
I was brought up to know that if you can't afford to buy something do without but unfortunately now some people will stop at nothing to get what they want.

My impression from this story is that the accused is a mental health case so would be unfair to compare them to t w o k e rs who cause death by dangerous driving. However, I could be wrong

I wasn't being rude or obnoxious at all. I simply stated that I don't need your approval, agreeance or thumbs up regarding any comment I make on here. And that applies equally to anyone who makes comments on here.

So to start your comment with... ' its not often I agree with your opinion.....' I don't care either way. It's irrelevant.
So apologies if I came across abruptly, but I think you missed the point somewhat. I hate sensorship, especially when it comes from some newspaper who twist the truth as and when they see fit anyway and then silence the voice of the public when they feel like it.
