DARLINGTON residents have until midnight on February 17, 2014, to join a scheme to lower household energy bills.

The Big Community Switch brings people together to buy energy and the more people that join up, the greater the purchasing power to get cheaper energy bills.

Suppliers compete in an auction to provide the cheapest tariff and afterwards residents receive personal offer detailing the savings.

Householders can then decide whether or not to accept the offer and switch energy suppliers.

There is no charge or obligation to accept the offer, and people living in rented accommodation can also sign up as long as energy bills are in their name.

At the last auction residents saved £130 on average.
