POLICE say a search in the waters around the Wearmouth Bridge in Sunderland has turned up nothing.

At just after 5pm, on Wednesday, December 18, police were called to the bridge after receiving a report of something falling from it.

"Searches of the area and river have been carried out by officers from Sunderland Area Command and the Marine Unit, accompanied by the Coast Guard. Aerial searches were also conducted. However, all searches have proved negative," said a spokeswoman for Northumbria Police.

"Enquiries have also been made in relation to anyone missing from the area which have also proved negative.

"Searches will continue today, however, at this stage, it appears a part of the wooden gantry may have fallen from underneath the bridge due to weather conditions."

An inspection of the bridge is due to take place today by the local authority.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101, extension 69191.
