AN uninsured motorist has admitted being over the drink drive limit at the time of a serious road accident.

But Martin Robinson has denied driving dangerously to cause the crash in Consett, County Durham, on February 24 this year.

He was at the wheel of a BMW car which was involved in a collision with an oncoming vehicle, while he was allegedly attempting an overtaking manoeuvre, having pulled out from a line of traffic in bad weather on the A692.

Appearing at Durham Crown Court today (Tuesday December 10) 31-year-old Robinson pleaded ‘not guilty’ to a charge of causing serious injury to the male driver of the other vehicle by dangerous driving.

But he admitted driving with excess alcohol, as he gave a sample revealing 105mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood, compared to the legal limit of 80mg, following the accident.

Robinson also admitted driving the BMW that day while not insured.

The case was adjourned for a trial and Robinson, of Arkless Grove, The Grove, Consett, was bailed to return for the hearing, on Wednesday January 8.

But, due to Robinson’s admissions to the latter two charges, Judge Christopher Prince imposed an interim driving disqualification, the length of which will be determined after the outcome of the trial.

Stephen Duffield, for Robinson, told the court that the defendant has not driven since the incident.
