A MOVING cathedral service by candlelight returns this weekend (Sunday, December 15).

St Cuthbert’s Hospice’s Light Up A Life service will be held at Durham Cathedral on Sunday (December 15) at 7pm.

The service marks the end of the Durham City hospice’s annual Light Up A Life campaign, which invites people who have lost a loved one to honour them by making a donation to the cause.

In return, the deceased’s name is entered into a Book of Remembrance which is dedicated at the cathedral service.

Among those supporting the appeal this year is Arthur Maughan MBE, a founder of Lanchester Lions, whose wife Mavis spent time at the hospice prior to her death in January 2011.

He said: “She immediately felt at home and ended up staying at the hospice for two weeks.

“She didn’t want to leave by the end and couldn’t praise the caring staff highly enough. She described it as care she’d never experienced elsewhere.”

Sunday’s service is open to all. For more information, call 0191-386-1170.
