DOZENS of people have taken part in a walk to demand justice for hit-and-run victim Danny Wake.

The three-year-old, from Darlington, was knocked over and killed on November 4, as he walked home from the town centre with his mother, Kayren Winter, and younger brother, Georgie.

Despite extensive and repeated appeals, both from police and members of Danny’s family, the driver responsible for the youngster’s death has so far not been traced.

The spot where Danny was knocked over, near the junction of Falmer Road and Neasham Road, has become a makeshift shrine to his memory in the five weeks since the tragedy.

Hundreds, if not thousands, of floral tributes, cuddly toys, candles and cards with messages of love and support, have been laid on the corner of Falmer Road.

On Saturday morning, friends and family took part in a Justice for Danny walk, with the aim of jogging people’s memories about the tragedy in the hope of unearthing a crucial piece of evidence that will lead police to making a breakthrough.

They walked from his flowers, down Neasham Road and past St John’s Church, where hundreds of people attended his funeral last month, before heading back towards Falmer Road.

Participants carried home-made banners and wore T-shirts emblazoned with the youngsters face and pictures of his favourite toy, Buzz Lightyear from the Toy Story films.

The walk was organised by Danny’s auntie, Helen Winter, and word that it was happening spread on Facebook.

Danny, who lived in the Lascelles Park area of Darlington, had been into town with his mother and brother to collect a catalogue from which he was going to choose his Christmas presents. Tragically, he was denied that chance.

His family showed great generosity by allowing the Darlington Christmas Appeal – in which donations of toys were collected, prior to being distributed to the town’s neediest youngsters in the days leading up to Christmas – to be relaunched in Danny’s memory.

The appeal has had a phenomenal response, with hundreds of donations left at The Northern Echo offices, in Priestgate, and the Salvation Army headquarters, in Thompson Street East.

Anyone with information that could help bring justice for Danny Wake is asked to call Durham Police on 101.
