Mystery Darlington Stitch Bombers left disappointed after creations are stolen and vandalised

The Northern Echo: One of the colourful bollard covers that has been stolen One of the colourful bollard covers that has been stolen

THE mystery crafters behind the stitch bombing of Darlington town centre have spoken of their disappointment after their creations were stolen and vandalised.

Just days after the colourful creations appeared in the town, thieves have already stolen some of the items, including colourful crochet patterns hung from railings and a number bright bollard covers.

A knitted handbag had also been stolen, as well as knitted bunting that had been hung on the Covered Market and a large Christmas-themed patchwork piece draped over a letterbox.

One crocheted panel has also been slashed using a pair of scissors and a decorated bike has been vandalised.

A spokeswoman for the self-titled group, the Darlington Stitch Bombers, said the creative crafters were disappointed with the damage, and urged people to respect their work.

“We are really quite gutted with what has happened, and quite annoyed – some people had spent weeks on their pieces,” she said.

“I think it is quite disrespectful. This is somebody from Darlington who has a complete lack of respect and disregard for the town.

“The only thing we can do to feel positive about it is that they really must have wanted them.

“If they want to have an item like that they can contact me and I will show them how to make it for themselves.”

She also said one lady, who is disabled, had spent weeks making bollard covers with miniature knitted people on, only for them to be stolen before she had chance to see them.

“She messaged me asking if we had put them up as she had gone into town and realised they weren’t there,” she said.

“We have tried to do something to improve Darlington, but we can’t afford to spend money on wool and things only for them to get stolen.”

Their handiwork, which appeared in Darlington overnight, has attracted a lot of attention and praise from visitors and residents alike.

Samantha Blackham, who runs the monthly Darlington Sunday People's Market, said: "It is superb. It brightens up the town. I really hope they keep adding to it - they need to keep doing more.”

Anyone interested in joining the Darlington Stitch Bombers can call The Northern Echo on 01325-505073 or email newsdesk@nne.co.uk

Sad to say I am not surprised but thank them for trying to cheer up a world that is quite depressing at present. It would have been nice for them to have lasted at least through to Christmas.

I hope they can do it again sometime. That may explain why there seemed very little to see when I travelled into the town on Sunday.

In a previous post on the original story I mentionedhow my own town's £7million revamp has been spoilt within weeks, pavements stained and new seats damaged and the edges of the wood are chipped and splinted suggesting they have been used as an obstacle course by bikers. I suspect sadly it will end up looking in a similar state and the improvement temporary.

And the attitude to the little works of art of the MSB's by some is the same.

Am I wrong or did I read in the past that the wool figures in Saltburn suffered a similar fate for a time?

Typical, darlo knuckle draggers have to spoil things don't they? If you put a strange object in a cage of chimpanzees they go crazy and start attacking it, this is no different because the local inbred's don't understand what its is they with vandalise it. Just look when the electronic bus timetables were originally put up, they got broken. Where were the cctv operators while this was being destroyed? probably turned their screens off because something was actually happening and they would have to do some actual work and inform the police who would in turn, turn up a week late if at all!

A wonderful piece of community art wrecked by spiteful thieves. They really do need to think about their malicious acts and realise what it says about them.

There's no pride to be gained from vandalism, it only acts as a magnet of opprobrium from the decent folk of the town.

Sadly, the perpetrators are likely to lack sufficient self awareness to know what they did decreases their status and not elevate it.

They also lack the bravery to commit their acts of vandalism is broad daylight in public view.

So summing up:

The town has a minority of cowardly and ignorant killjoys who care little for the community in which they live. 'Live long and prosper' is not a sentiment that I'd share with them.
