THE BODY of a woman has been found at the base of a cliff in Whitby today.

A search operation was launched after a member of the public reported seeing a woman slip from Whitby’s East Cliff, near the Abbey, this morning (Sunday, November 3).

Humber Coastguard received an emergency call just before 9am and coastguard rescue crews from Whitby, Scarborough and Staithes took part in a search.

An RAF Sea King helicopter was also scrambled to help with the search.

North Yorkshire Police say they are currently investigating the circumstances of the woman’s death, which they say at this point is still “unexplained”.

The incident has happened less than two weeks after an elderly man died after falling from cliffs in the area.

On Monday, October 21, the 76-year-old man was airlifted by the RAF Sea King helicopter after falling down the steep drop near Whitby Abbey.

But the man died in The James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough.
