LP REVIEWS: Michael Garrick Sextet/Prelude to Heart is a Lotus (Gearbox GB1517) Yes, that does say LP, not CD. These are the latest vinyl only*, 180 gram pressings, limited edition, previously unreleased issues on specialist label Gearbox. The Michael Garrick, from a 1968 BBC Jazz in Britain recording, presents the pianist and composer in peak form in different versions of his works which appeared on Black Marigolds, October Woman and The Heart is a Lotus. The line-up consists of Ian Carr trumpet, both Don Rendell and Jim Philip on saxes and flutes, Coleridge Goode bass and Trevor Tomkins percussion. Garrick also plays very effective harpsichord and celeste and the whole thing is clearly recorded with a warm sound.

Back Door/BBC In Concert (Gearbox GB1516) With such strong roots in this area there should be a big welcome for this new album by the innovative jazzrock (and blues) band. It’s by the original line-up of Ron Aspery on saxes and flute, Colin Hodgkinson, bass guitar, and Tony Hicks, drums, with singer Alexis Korner guesting on some tracks. gearboxrecords.com
