A COMMUNITY centre has celebrated its 50th anniversary in style.
Visitors were treated to a tea dance, Taekwondo demonstration and carpet bowls competition as Owton Manor Community Centre in Hartlepool marked its golden anniversary.
Councillor Stephen Akers-Belcher, the Mayor of Hartlepool, was also on hand to unveil a plaque to mark the event.
The £61,000 centre and library was officially opened on October 23, 1963 by the Mayor of West Hartlepool, Councillor Jack Addison, at the culmination of a £6m-plus development of the surrounding estate.
Coun Akers-Belcher said: “The many thousands of people who use the community centre and library each year and the wide range of activities which take place there are testament to the success of the original vision.
“The centre and library are at the heart of the local community and everyone who has played their part in helping to achieve that should feel very proud as we commemorate this marvellous half century.”
The centre hosts a wide range of activities including art classes, sewing, crochet, carpet bowls, Taekwondo, sequence dancing and a wine circle. Groups such as Slimming World, Blood Donors and the Alzheimer’s Society are also regular users of the venue.
