Hard-working animal sanctuary apprentice from Willington wins top award
A YOUNG apprentice’s invaluable contribution to a North-East animal sanctuary has earned him a prestigious award.
Daniel Wolstencroft, of Willington in County Durham, has received County Durham Community Foundation’s Outstanding Achievement Award in recognition of his work at Kays Hill Animal Sanctuary in West Auckland.
The 19-year-old secured his apprenticeship through the foundation’s Learning Working Earning initiative and was singled out from more than 100 other apprentices.
It comes as the scheme, which offers grants to help unemployed people of all ages overcome barriers in their quest to find a job, receives a £500,000 funding boost from philanthropists Jonathan and Jane Ruffer.
Mr Wolstencroft was nominated for the award by his employer Kevin Plummer, who highlighted his enthusiasm, exceptional manners and willingness to go the extra mile.
“Daniel shone from day one, and has very quickly become a key member of the team,” said Mr Plummer.
“He comes in early every day and often works late when animals require veterinary treatment, has never had a day off and now comes in six days a week, every week.
“He’s also given up one night each month to join our committee and is actively involved in fundraising work.”
Jayne Lovegreen, of Bishop Auckland, who works for residential property firm AMRP in Ferryhill, and Antonia Mole, of Durham, who works at the LJ Retail Group in Meadowfield, were also shortlisted for the award.
Barbara Gubbins, chief executive of County Durham Community Foundation, said: “Daniel, Jayne and Antonia have all made exceptional contributions to their respective workplaces and are all very worthy of the recognition they’ve received by being nominated and shortlisted.”
Launched in March this year, the Learning Working Earning scheme allows people to take up an apprenticeship or work-based learning opportunity, where the employer has guaranteed a minimum of a year’s commitment to employ, support and train the individual.
Those eligible can access grants of up to £5,000 to assist with training or transport costs, specialist equipment, or anything else that is proving a barrier.
The money can also be used to help employers pay a proportion of their new employee’s salary.
To date, in excess of £400,000 has been given out to more than 100 people and the new grant will help even more people back to work.
