Celebrations for 135th anniversary of Salvation Army Band
CELEBRATIONS to commemorate to formation of the 135th anniversary of the World’s Oldest Salvation Army Band in the North-East have taken place over the weekend.
Events were held at the Salvation Army Citadel in Sherburn Terrace, Consett, where the group was created in 1878.
Guest musicians included Andrew Justice, principal trombonist with the International Staff Band of the SA, Brian Mercer, pianist and band leader from North Shields SA and vocalist Hayley Stubbs from Derby SA.
They performed concerts on Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon.
Consett SA cornet player David Jackson also organised a photographic exhibition looking at the history of the band.
He said: “The weekend has gone really well. The exhibition was a look back at all our yesteryears. It has been fascinating and the music has been wonderful.”
