Recognition for pair who helped a man stabbed in a Darlington home by partner
TWO men who rushed to the aid of a stab victim have been presented with a bravery award.
Adam Crawford, 23, and Lee Wardell, 34, were awarded a Chief Superintendent’s Commendation today (Friday, October 18) for their selfless actions in Darlington last year.
The pair, both from Darlington, were in a barber’s shop on Gladstone Street on October 26 when a distressed woman burst into the shop and asked for the emergency services to be called.
Mr Crawford and Mr Wardell heard the woman had stabbed her partner inside a house close to the barber’s and without hesitating both rushed to the scene to help.
They gave first aid to the victim, who was having trouble breathing due to a puncture wound near his shoulder.
Mr Crawford and Mr Wardell stayed with the man until an ambulance arrived and took him to James Cook Hospital in Middlesbrough where he later made a full recovery.
Chief Superintendant Graham Hall of Durham Constabulary praised their actions and said: “It was apparent that the man was in difficulty in terms of breathing, but as a result of their actions he was provided with great support and reassurance in what was obviously a very difficult time.”
He added that Commendations were rarely handed out and were reserved for those who went above and beyond expectations to help others.
“I think that it is essential that we recognise the actions of the community in supporting other members of the community, particularly at times such as this.
“They (Mr Crawford and Mr Wardell) disregarded their own personal safety and delivered a number of actions which safeguarded the victim and calmed the victim.
“I would not put the message out for people to approach and try to disarm somebody that might be armed with a knife, but here you had two people who calmly put others before themselves and did splendid work in securing the safety of the victim and restoring the calm in what was an extremely challenging scenario.”
Mr Crawford and Mr Wardell were presented with their Commendations at Darlington police station last night (Friday, October 18).
A woman was arrested and charged for the knife attack.
