Man in court charged with the murder of 25-year-old Darlington man, Alan Youngson
A MAN has appeared in court charged with the murder of a 25-year-old whose body was found in a shallow grave almost two months after he went missing.
Daniel Dodsworth, of Branksome Green, Darlington, appeared at Peterlee Magistrates’ Court today (Monday, October 14) charged with the murder of 25-year-old Alan Youngson, who had not been seen since August 15.
The 28-year-old wore a black jumper to the short hearing and spoke only to confirm his name, age and address.
He entered no pleas and was remanded in custody ahead of his appearance at Teesside Crown Court on Wednesday (October 16).
A post-mortem examination revealed Mr Youngson died from head injuries.
Four men arrested on Friday (October 11) on suspicion of his murder have been bailed until December, pending further enquiries.
A 22-year-old woman from York, and a 30-year-old man from the North Road area of Darlington, were also arrested yesterday (Sunday, October 13) on suspicion of assisting an offender and have been bailed until December, pending further enquiries.
Detective Superintendent Kevin Weir, who is leading the investigation, said: “There has been much police activity in Darlington over the last few days in relation to this investigation.
“I would like to thank members of the community for their support and patience.
“Anyone with any information they feel would assist with ongoing inquiries is asked to get in touch with police.”
A man's body was found by a member of the public last Monday (October 7) in woodland near Jedburgh Drive, in the Branksome area of Darlington, near the A1(M).
Although formal identification has not yet taken place, police believe it to be the body of Mr Youngson.
The woodland area was cordoned off while about 50 officers worked at the scene, some examining forensic evidence while others conducted house-to-house inquiries around the Branksome estate, near where the body was discovered.
It is understood Mr Youngson moved to Darlington about five years ago from Hamilton, South Lanarkshire, and has previously lived in Jedburgh Drive.
He is also thought to have two young daughters.
